What Are My Options for Getting Rid of the Fat Under My Chin?

CoolSculpting, necklifts, & liposuction in Montreal

Having a “double chin,” or excess fat under your chin, is not always a reflection of your weight. Other factors, such as genetics and aging, can contribute to the development of excess fat under the chin (called submental fat).

A double chin is nothing to be embarrassed by. However, if it bothers you, Dr. Arie Benchetrit offers a number of treatment solutions.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Submental Fat

Dr. Benchetrit can inject a special fat-dissolving substance called deoxycholic acid to permanently get rid of stubborn, unwanted submental fat. When injected into the fat, deoxycholic acid breaks down fat cells, which the body then absorbs and eliminates through natural processes. The injections are quick and can be conveniently administered in our office. There is virtually no downtime. Usually a series of treatments is recommended, spaced every four weeks.

Another non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment option for unwanted submental fat is to freeze it away with CoolSculpting. This treatment subjects the fat to freezing temperatures, causing the fat cells to die. The body then naturally excretes the fat cells. Like injectable treatment, CoolSculpting treatment can be completed relatively quickly in our office, and requires little to no downtime.

Surgical Solutions for Submental Fat

Not all cases of submental fat can be treated with non-surgical means. Sometimes Dr. Benchetrit recommends surgery to achieve the desired results.

One option is to use liposuction to remove the fat and sculpt the area under the chin and on the neck. During liposuction, Dr. Benchetrit uses a thin tube called a cannula to precisely remove fat from different areas in the chin and jawline. After treatment, the chin and neck look smoother and slimmer. Liposuction causes slight bruising and requires several days of downtime. It can take up to a month to see the final result.

Neck liposuction is only effective if the skin under the chin and on the neck is firm, elastic and can contract over the tissues after surgery. If the skin on the neck is loose and inelastic, neck lift may be the more appropriate treatment. During neck lift, excess fat and skin are removed, the neck muscles are tightened and the skin is re-draped smoothly over the underlying structures. Like liposuction, neck lift involves a recovery period, but most patients believe the dramatic results are well worth it.
