What Is the Difference Between Botox and Facial Fillers?

Botox, Dermal Fillers Montreal, QC

If you are looking for a nonsurgical option for a natural and more youthful-looking face, then you have probably heard of Botox and facial fillers. While both are injectable cosmetic treatments, they actually work in different ways and are used to address different cosmetic concerns. In this post, Dr. Arie Benchetrit discusses the difference between Botox and facial fillers.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a wrinkle-smoothing injectable. It is actually derived from a bacterium and, when injected, works by blocking nerve impulses to the facial muscles. This causes the muscles to temporarily relax and results in smoother and more youthful-looking skin.

The Botox procedure usually takes five to 20 minutes depending on the areas being treated. It is an outpatient procedure that typically has mild side effects (if any). Patients can return to work immediately after Botox injections.  The results generally last three to four months.

Botox has many cosmetic and non-cosmetic uses. It can be used to treat migraine headaches, reduce teeth grinding, and even treat excessive armpit sweating.

The most popular use of Botox is for cosmetic purposes. When injected into specific areas of the face and neck, Botox can reduce the appearance of the following:

  • Small wrinkles around the outer corners of the eyes
  • Sagging brows
  • Forehead furrows
  • Downturned lip corners

Keep in mind that Botox can actually be used to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and many patients choose to get Botox when wrinkles first appear. However, Botox can be beneficial at any stage in the aging process.

What Are Facial Fillers?

Facial fillers, like Botox, are cosmetic injectables used to create a smoother and more youthful-looking appearance. Unlike Botox, facial fillers refill lost volume in the face and lips; they can also minimize lines and wrinkles in the face.

The facial filler procedure usually takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on the areas being treated. It is an outpatient procedure, and the potential side effects include swelling and possible bruising. Most patients are able to return to work immediately after facial filler injections.

Dr. Benchetrit specializes in the use of a number of facial fillers, including the following:

  • Restylane
  • Juvederm
  • Radiesse
  • Sculptra
  • PRP

Each of the above facial fillers works differently and has its own benefits. Additionally, the results from the above facial fillers last for different durations. Some last several months while others can last up to two years or more (much longer than Botox results).
